Black rutilated quartz is a natural combination of two distinct minerals: a clear quartz host crystal and dark, needle-like mineral inclusions trapped inside called iron-rich rutile and black tourmaline. The main body of the stone is silicon dioxide (SiO₂), which forms the transparent or translucent quartz matrix. The striking dark filaments running through it are actually separate mineral crystals that became locked inside the quartz lattice millions of years ago as it grew underground.
